Di another day

It is an inherent risk of commemorating plates. And I did chuckle. First seen here.

My fingers are not working

More lyrics snippets of one of my favourite songs, transfigured into something surreal by a sequence of 50 on-line translations. This one is from Porcupine Tree's beautiful Fear of a blank planet. Produced here.

Chicken wire sculptures

As usual when it ends up in this blog, I admire the crafts and the originality, but find it lacking in true artistic qualities. That said, the portrait sculptures Ivan Lovatt makes from chicken wire are amazing. As an example I have picked his take on eighties' icon Grace Jones. First seen here.

Camera USB

If I ever see this in a shop, I'll get it. A must-have for photographers, this 4 GB USB stick based on the traditional camera/lens design. First seen here.

Useless clock

To design a clock like this, you must be either a sadist or an insensitive nut. What's the point in making the design resemble a colour blindness test, so that 10% of the male population will not be able to use it at all? Way to go, people of Sonodesign. First seen here.

Birthday balloon

This seemed a fitting follow-up of my happy birthday post. Gotta love that expression. First seen here.

Happy Birthday Lulu darling

Today is my own princess' birthday. Many more years, my darling Lulu! Image sourced from here.

Insect art

Just shy of the artistic quality I look for in my Art blog, but wonderful material for Potpourri. Mike Libby creates these miniature sculptures from dead insects and antique watch parts. First seen here.

Copy paste

You may have seen this one or variations on the theme before - I like this shot best. Wonderfully creative T-shirts for geeky twins. Recently seen here.

Rock salad with crude dressing

Another amazing advertising blast from the past - and this time more close to home work than is comfortable for me personally. Hard to believe that there was a time that oil products would sell like this. First seen here.

Bathroom school memory market

More lyrics snippets of one of my favourite songs, transfigured into something surreal by a sequence of 50 on-line translations. This one is from Marillion's hit Kayleigh. Produced here.

Nunbrellas

What a fun topical shot, thanks to the visit of the pope to the UK. Two nuns have changed their habits. For the better. First seen here.

M-M-Mooncake

Today is the traditional Chinese mid-autumn festival, a day associated with eating mooncakes (round or rectangular pastries, measuring about 10 cm in diameter and 4-5 cm thick with a heavy filling usually made from lotus seed paste). This one is slightly bigger, and was exhibited by a manufacturer at the moon cakes and food expo in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality. First seen here.

Volkswagen

I would guess that this one dates back to around 1960, when advertisers not only got away with this kind of crap, but apparently it even helped to sell. This VW has easy to replace parts in case the wife drives. First seen here.

Ultra-realistic wooden sculptures

Crafts rather than fine art, but amazing craft it is. The artist is Randall Rosenthal creates incredible wooden sculptures of day-to-day objects, so realistic and so detailed that it is very easy to be mistaken. Look at this image above. It’s not paper. First seen here.

Musical comb

Modhair, a Rome Rock 'n Roll hair salon needed a creative and interesting business card. Using the same principle of a music box comb, this comb plays a classic rock theme when rubbed by fingernail. Very clever. First seen here.

Employees

There is definitely some truth in this (and to top it off, I always have Wednesdays off...). First seen here.

YouTube addicts

Whoever comes up with ideas like this? Fun way to make fun of these addicts. First seen here.

False values and torture

More lyrics snippets of one of my favourite songs, transfigured into something surreal by a sequence of 50 on-line translations. This one is from Pink Floyd's classic Shine on you crazy diamond. Produced here.

IKEA Escher bunk

No, unfortunately for all Escher fans, this is a spoof advertisement. First seen here.

Hey Banksy!

A wonderful self-referring piece of graffiti by the master himself (Banksy). First seen here.

Splish splash

What a wonderful shot, with the feet of the little bath tub being the icing on the cake. First seen here.

Communism

Another unexpected place for one of my shots to surface: in the photograph encyclopedia Fotopedia, under the heading commmunism. I shot this one in Presov, Slovakia: a mural dating back to the communist days. First seen here.

Live scenes from New York

In itself, there is nothing wrong with this cover for Dream Theater's live album - were it not that this one, with its image of New York and the twin towers in flame, was released at the very day of the terrorist attack, nine years ago today. An unfortunate coincidence, which of course led to the recall of all CD's produced. Image sourced from here.

Time for a nap

One of my favourite shots amongst the dog photographs in my Flickr stream. I shot this one in the town of Utrecht, where this dog is part of the furniture of a shop. First seen here.

Employee survey

Another Dilbert that is too close to truth for comfort. First seen here.

Stumble upon

Anyone who like me tends to get hooked on the "stumble upon" experience, will recognize this feeling. Don't know where I found this, it has been on my hard disk for a while.

Bedouins living in Israel and illusion

I have blogged about this site before in July, but as I announced there, this is really addictive. So I am turning this into a regular feature of this blog. Lyrics snippets of some of my favourite songs, transfigured into something surreal by a sequence of 50 on-line translations. This one is from Genesis' Mad man moon. Produced here.

Where there is smoke....

Another creative use of small plastic figurines in a setting that belies their size. First seen here.

Googled: abstracted architecture

Flickr gives you a statistics option that shows you from which link people access your shots. I am always curious, so I usually check, especially when it is from Google images. I will be posting some of the Google image searches where one or more of my shots actually ended up on the front page. Kicking off with the search term abstracted architecture, which shows no less than three of mine on page one, including the very first photograph. First seen here.

Mountain holiday

Another off-beat shot by Spanish photographer Chema Madoz, the Magritte of photography. First seen here.

Gaga

On-line translators are notoriously accident prone, but this one takes it to a totally different level. First seen here.

West fjords

Another magnificent satellite shot. The West Fjords are a series of peninsulas in northwestern Iceland. They represent less than one-eighth the country’s land area, but their jagged perimeter accounts for more than half of Iceland’s total coastline. First seen here.

Google buckyball tribute

Quick! Go to google before the day ends... they celebrate the 25th anniversary of the discovery of buckyballs (fullerenes) with a wonderful animated version of their logo. First seen here.

3D portraits from telephonebooks

Once again an example of crafts rather than fine arts, but what an amazing result. Using a very sharp knife, Alex Queral carefully peels away the pages like the skin of an onion to reveal the portrait within. In this case of course Clint Eastwood. First seen here.

Pi

Here's one for the mathematical geeks: a necklace with the first 100 decimal places of pi. First seen here.

Vegetable art

As Jenny Downing puts in in her buzz: a must see. Chinese artist Ju Douqi recreated famous masterpieces with vegetables, such as Munch's scream. Well worth clicking to browse the others as well. First seen here.

Art inside a toilet roll

Anastassia Elias creates fantastic scenes inside empty toilet paper rolls - crafts rather than fine art, but fascinating results. First seen here.
