As the year draws to a close, an image that struck me as my wife is once more in Shanghai, this time until the summer. I will be visiting her in a few weeks from now. First seen here.
The most amazing cake I have ever seen was recently on display in Bangalore, India. This replica of Mumbai’s Taj Mahal Palace Hotel measure 7x5 m, and contains a baffling five tons of sugar. Calories were not mentioned, but must run in the tens of millions. First seen here.
A new subject: the well-known Absolut vodka advertising campaigns or variations thereof - depicting the vodka bottle shape. This one is by New York advertising photographer Steve Bronstein. First seen here.
Amidst stiff competition, this is probably the single worst Christmas album cover of all time (the link has some other candidates as well). The culprit is Eilert Pilarm, a Swedish Elvis impersonator. The album title translates as Eilerts Christmas. First seen here.
When I checked the blog Oddee yesterday evening (a daily routine), I did a double take: their latest post was this funny advertisement. Why the double take? Let me quote the post: "This Christmas all readers of the Almere Vandaag get an extra present. This free morning newspaper for all Almere residents gives away due to this festivity an origami Christmas tree ball made out of newspaper. You have to fold it yourself, of course. Gladly, the Almere Vandaag also provides the readers with a 2-steps folding instruction for beginners. So it's not complicated and you'll enjoy building it." - well, we actually live in Almere (the sixth bigest city of the Netherlands), and the only reason I missed it is that we have a sign on our letter box stating that we do not want free newspapers............ Just a bit of fun with a Toy Story figurine they were giving away at the supermarket. I applied an extra effect (focal zoom) in Picnik. First seen here.
Clever even though perhaps a bit obvious. But I am a big Pink Floyd fan, so it made me smile. First seen on Fukung, a site to which I never link to because of their content.
A weird drawing to accompany a 1941 advertisement for Old Gold cigarettes. The ad states "Something new has been added" - makes you wonder whether that new ingredient was really tobacco. First seen here.
Flickr gives you a statistics option that shows you from which link people access your shots. I am always curious, so I usually check, especially when it is from Google images. I will be posting some of the Google image searches where one or more of my shots actually ended up on the front page. For this post, I take the search term citroen in the snow, which even shows two of mine on page one. First seen here.
Geeky it may be, but I am severely tempted. This hand crafted clock comes with twelve vintage star ship models taken from the famous SF series. First seen here.
These kinds of meme's tend to get old quick, but this is one of the best of the "photograph with caption" meme's I have seen. First seen on Fukung, a site to which I never link to because of their content.
If only he would show a bit more consistency in his output... in that case Juan Osborne would have ended up in Art for Art's Sake, because his best word art creations, like this portrait of Picasso, are highly artistic and original. First seen here.
A screen shot, not sure how long the company will let this stay on their site. Sympathize with the guy, who clearly snapped at a boring job. First seen via the Miss Cellania blog, here.
Having lived in the ultra-puritan Singapore for over three years, I was delighted to see this mishap for their national waterpolo team. Whoever designed these trunks based on the Singapore flag should have his/her head examined. First seen here.
Can I eat that? In this case, no! American sculptor and artist Kim Burke loves to create 1/12th scale miniatures of food from polymer clay, which looks amazingly real. First seen here.
Now here is a delightful design for a business card of a lawyer, specializing in divorce. First seen on Fukung, a site to which I never link to because of their content.
A photojournalism shot that made me do a double take, as this is Sinterklaas, who in the Dutch tradition hands out presents to children on 5 December - but in this photograph accompanied by weird creatures rather than the Zwarte Pieten (Black Petes) who do so in Holland. Turns out that similar versions of Sinterklaas are celebrated in parts of Southern Germany. His companions are so-called Buttenmandls, who are completely covered in straw and wear animal masks and cow bells. First seen here.
I started my main blog, Art for Art's sake, in 2006, to share my taste in photography, fine arts, architecture and music. In 2009, I started this counterpart blog, Art's Potpourri, as an outlet for other interesting matter and some chatter, which do not quite fit in the main blog.

Last December, Helen Frankenthaler (1928-2011) passed away (see a previous blog
entry). She was an important figure in the American abstract expressionist ...
