Halloween costume

First of a series of shots of animals in Halloween mode posted at the Telegraph site. I picked this one because of the way the squirrel seems to try out the pumpkin as a mask. First seen here.

The most extreme paths

The Oddee site recently listed the seven most extreme paths (foot-ways, bicycle paths) in the world. Some I had seen before, others (like the depicted one in Ireland) were new to me. All of them are scary as hell. First seen here.

More places for medicine students

Another unexpected place for one of my photographs to turn up: in a German article on the creation of more places for medicine students in Nord-Rhein-Westfalen. First seen here.

SuPerBus

I was tempted to put this under Mixed Nuts for the Arab Sheikh who actually paid $10 Million for the world’s first Superbus, designed by Dutch ex-astronaut Wubbo Ockels. The Superbus is 15 m long, and was built using only lightweight materials like carbon fiber, aluminum, polycarbonate and fiberglass. It runs exclusively on electric batteries charged by solar power. The hi-tech bus will travel the 75-mile distance between Abu Dhabi and Dubai in under 30 minutes. First seen here.

Downhill

Another wonderful scenerey created with food and a little plastic figurine by Christopher Boffoli. First seen here.

Clouds

A brilliant overview of ten of the most fascinating and unusual cloud formations. Even though I have not seen a single one of them in real life, I loved the collection. First seen here.

Escher in Lego

An amazing tour de force, this re-creation of one of Escher's most famous images in lego building blocks. Excellent work by Andrew Lipson from Cambridge. First seen here.

Green bean sawmill

Another excellent use of the combination of food and plastic figurines to produce a believable miniature scene. This one was once more created by Christopher Boffoli. First seen here.

Svintus power strip

I definitely need one - and so do you, if like me you have struggled with the oversized connectors and the small parallel holes in the usual distributors. Sheer genius in its simplicity. First seen here.

The male pin-up

I love these - the link has a lot more examples. Rion Sabean noticed the popularity of pin-up girls, and decided to create his own spin on the classic style we all know. They are called men-ups, and they are absolutely hilarious. First seen here.

Timber!

No, this is not a forced perspective shot. This Shanghai apartment building tumbled over whilst still under construction. It turned out that workers were digging illegally near the building, and so it collapsed. First seen here.

Puzzled Mosaics

I have seen portraits made from all kinds of unusual materials, but this is the first series that I come across where they are based on mosaics of puzzle pieces. The results are fantastic. Marvelous work by Doug Powell. First seen here.

MoonFighter pen

An absolute beauty - and no doubt not affordable at all. A limited edition of 888 pieces have been made of this fountain pen and its wing-shaped dock. First seen here.

Be VERY careful....

The devil is in the details (you may need to click the pic to see the relevant detail. But it sure would be effective. First seen here.

Grandpa

A funny variation on the plastic people theme. In this case it is not so much the figurine itself that draws attention but the old man's luggage - a viagra pill... First seen here.

Coat hanger sculptures

Not artistic enough to be featured in my main blog, but the coat hanger sculptures by David Mach surely qualify as amazing stuff. First seen here.

Samsung

The main Samsung site includes a slide show of shots made with their cameras - and I was pleasantly surprised to be featured there with one of mine. First seen here.

Highway to heaven

Forced perspective of a different kind. Not difficult to figure out what is going on here, but the result is marvelous. I post a slightly cropped version (my choice) from the original. First seen here.

Watch the music

Funny peculiar, not funny haha, as my English teacher used to say in the sixties. A very disturbing image as an ad for an FM radio station. It must have seemed like a good idea at the time, but the result is not likely to gain them more listeners. First seen here.

Guitar hero

Mixed nuts or special designs? In the end I decided on the former category, because I cannot see anybody seriously playing this contraption created by Yoshihiko Satoh. First seen here.

Lego house

This incredible Victorian house is constructed out of over 110,000 Lego pieces - without any alterations. A real tour de force by Mike Boyle. First seen here.

Greek restaurant business cards

I have seen plenty of unusual business cards, but this is one of the strangest - yet quite effective. A Greek restaurant decided to use broken plates for their business cards. First seen here.

Steve Jobs

I have already paid tribute to the late Steve Jobs in my main blog. This is one of the most impressive tributes I came across on the web these days. This digital mosaic, made out of Apple gadgets, was created by Greek designer Charis Tsevis. Fascinating. First seen here.

Citrus mower

Brilliant use of the combination of food and plastic figurines to produce a believable miniature scene. This one was created by Christopher Boffoli. First seen here.

Volkswagen Aqua

We just bought a new Opel Corsa a few months ago, otherwise... Designed by 21-year-old Yuhan Zhang, the Volkswagen Aqua is an all-terrain hovercraft , can easily maneuver on any surface, be it water, mud, roads or ice. No price was quoted in the reference though....

A show of hands

Love it or hate it. Count me in the former category. Encountered this on Fukung, no idea who created this beautiful animated gif.

Junk planes

I envy this guy his creativity and the results - I very much would like to own one. Ian Baron, a nuclear plant mechanic from Bowmanville, Canada, has spent the last five years building life-size replicas of old fighter planes from various kinds of junk - with amazing results, such as the Red Baron Fokker Triplane shown above. First seen here.

Baby tortoise

The tortoise or turtle is the lucky animal for my wife and me - and this is one of the cutest I have ever seen. A tiny baby tortoise to go awwwwwwwwwwww over. First seen here.

Celebrities as Russian generals

An interesting Photoshop experiment: celebrities pasted into paintings of Russian generals. Some of the results are utterly unbelievable, but some are remarkably realistic, such as Bruce Willis and Daniel Craig (shown above). First seen here.

Sushi Texas style

No, it is not Texas, but it might have been. The Umewaka Restaurant in Anjo City, Japan, has become famous for serving arguably the world’s largest sushi dishes, up to 20 cm in diameter and nearly 6-kg-heavy. Bon appetit. First seen here.

We have the technology

This is such a fun shot, especially if you remember the 70s' SF TV series The Six Million Dollar Man, from which this quote was taken. First seen here.
